Women’s basketball wins big against Concordia; men secure crucial victory
The SAIT Trojans Women’s Basketball team continued their strong season with a dominant performance against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
On Saturday, Nov. 30, the Trojans hosted the Thunder at the SAIT Bubble.
Anegol Wol scored 10 of the Trojans’ 26 points in the first quarter as the team took an early 26-5 lead.
By halftime, the Trojans led 42-13 and were well on their way to their best offensive game of the season.
The Trojans overwhelmed the Thunder, winning 80-38.
Brook Baker led the Trojans offence, recording 17 points, nine assists and seven steals.
With the win, the Trojans sit first in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball South standings with an 8-1 record.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 10, when they host the Olds College Broncos at the SAIT Bubble. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
The Trojans men’s basketball team sought momentum after two straight losses.
Hosting the Thunder at the SAIT Bubble, the men’s team put up big offensive numbers.
The Trojans jumped out to a 34-15 lead in the first quarter.
Despite scoring only nine points in the second quarter, the Trojans maintained a 43-38 lead at halftime.
The Trojans pulled away in the second half, securing an 86-67 victory on Saturday night.
Awer Awer led the Trojans with 23 points and six rebounds. Marcus Masters had a strong presence off the bench, adding 22 points and six rebounds.
With the win, the Trojans Men’s Basketball team is tied for third in the ACAC Men’s Basketball South standings with the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m., when they host the Olds College Broncos at the SAIT Bubble.
Women’s hockey drops two to NAIT; men split against Briercrest
The Trojans Women’s Hockey team continued to struggle, dropping two games to the NAIT Ooks over the weekend.
On Friday, Nov. 29, the Trojans faced the Ooks in Edmonton.
The Ooks opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Keagan Goulet, assisted by Kelly Stanford and Callie Dach.
In the second period, Halle Graham extended the Ooks' lead to 2-0, with assists from Caitlyn Tong and Jessica Engelbrecht.
The Trojans responded early in the third period with a power-play goal from Devon McConnell, assisted by Jorja Chevalier and Sarah Hopping.
Late goals from Stanford and Grace Morton sealed a 4-1 victory for the Ooks.
The teams met again the next day at Winsport Arena in Calgary, where the Ooks delivered another dominant performance.
Stanford and Goulet scored in the first period to give the Ooks an early 2-0 lead.
A goal from Abby Bryant and a power-play goal by Cheyenna Harden put the game out of reach as the Ooks won 4-0.
With the losses, the Trojans sit second-last in the ACAC Women’s Hockey standings with a 2-10 record.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m., when they travel to Red Deer to face the Red Deer Polytechnic College Queens.
Sitting atop the ACAC standings with a 9-1 record, the Trojans Men’s Hockey team hosted Briercrest College for a weekend doubleheader at Winsport Arena.
In Friday’s matchup, Briercrest took a 4-0 lead by the second period, highlighted by power-play goals from Lucas Lapalm and Jake Dale.
The Trojans rallied with goals from Zach Cain and Colby Bear but fell short, losing 5-2.
In Saturday’s rematch, Ryan Neumann opened the scoring for the Trojans in the second period, assisted by Dylan Clark and Kayden Skulmoski.
Briercrest tied it late in the second, but Brandon Machado scored the overtime winner on the power play with assists from Tye Carriere and Cory King, securing a 2-1 victory for the Trojans.
With the split, the Trojans remain first in the ACAC Men’s Hockey standings with a 10-2 record.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m., when they travel to Edmonton to face the NAIT Ooks.
Volleyball teams sweep the Thunder in Edmonton
The SAIT Trojans Women’s Volleyball team earned a clutch victory against the Thunder after a tough first eight games of the season.
On Saturday, Nov. 30, the Trojans travelled to Edmonton to take on the Thunder.
The Thunder started strong, taking the first set 25-22.
The rest of the match was all Trojans, who won the next three sets 25-7, 25-21 and 25-22 to secure a 3-1 victory.
Sophia Ferguson, Sarah Henriksen and Taryn Corkery each recorded 10 kills for the Trojans in an outstanding offensive team performance.
With the win, the Trojans are tied for third in the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South standings.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m., when they travel to Olds to face the Broncos.
The Trojans Men’s Volleyball team, sitting at an even 4-4 for the season, also picked up a hard-fought win against the Thunder.
The Trojans narrowly took the first set 25-22 and dominated the second set 25-14.
After dropping the third set 27-25 in a back-and-forth battle, the Trojans closed out the match with a decisive 25-19 win in the fourth set for a 3-1 victory.
Jaxson Thys and Gustavo Machado were offensive standouts for the Trojans, each recording 13 kills.
With the win, the Trojans sit in third place in the ACAC Men’s Volleyball South standings.
Their next game is Friday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m., when they travel to Olds to face the Broncos.
