Trojans split in Lethbridge
LETHBRIDGE, ALTA., (Sept. 22, 2019) - One Trojans soccer team avenged a win that got away, while the other failed to win for the first time this season.
The SAIT Trojans men's and women's soccer teams travelled to Lethbridge, Alta., on Sunday to take on the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. The women were able to secure a 2-0 victory, while the men dropped a tough 2-1 decision.
Twenty-four hours earlier, the women's team gave up a late goal to settle for a 3-3 draw with Medicine Hat College, so earning all three points possible on Sunday felt pretty darn good.
"We all knew what we needed to do, and how important it was," said Trojans head coach, John Talerico, whose team handed Lethbridge College their first loss of the year. "We decided that we just need to take it to them, and we did just that."
Rookie standout Kenzie Georgsen (1st year, Chestermere, Alta., Architectural Technologies) did most of the heavy lifting, as she scored both goals in the game to help the Trojans move their ACAC South Division record to 2-2-1.
On the men's side, the now 4-1 Trojans took an early lead, but gave it up on route to their first loss of the year.
"Today, we just didn't look like a united group," said head coach, Connor Brady. "We played like individuals, and you can't do that to a team that's as tough and work as hard as Lethbridge College. We didn't answer the bell today."
SAIT's goal was scored by Yusuph Kalenga (3rd year, Edmonton, English Language Foundations).
The Kodiaks responded with goals by Sodiq Adekunle and Jimmy Bukuru.
Both SAIT teams will get back at it next weekend with a home game on Saturday, Sept. 28 against the visiting Red Deer College Kings/Queens. The women's game begins at noon, and the men follow at 2pm.
A day later, they will head north to take on Olds College - again with the women at noon and the men at 2pm.
