SAIT's Dean Northover slides in an attempt to keep the ball from the Red Deer College keeper on Saturday.
(Daylin Holmen/SAIT Trojans)CALGARY, (Sept. 30, 2017) - William Akio scored the only goal necessary. He then added two more just to be safe.
The second-year striker scored a hat trick Saturday afternoon as his SAIT Trojans men's soccer team downed the visiting Red Deer College Kings 5-0 in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played at Cohos Commons Field.
"Last week, I felt I was struggling a bit offensively, so it was nice to get these goals today and help my team out," said Akio, who was the ACAC's Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year last season. "Three more points today."
Akio's eight goals in six games this year not only has him leading the entire ACAC, but surpasses the six he scored last season in nine games.
SAIT moved to 5-0-1 on the campaign with the win. Red Deer falls to 1-4-2.
The first of three from Akio came just 10 minutes into the contest. From there, the Trojans were able to put their foot on the gas pedal.
"That's been us all year. As soon as we get the first goal, we just keep going from there," Akio stated. "It's a confidence boost."
After Akio's third game, it was teammate Bruke Alemayhu's (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration) turn to get in on the action.
After being held without a goal for a combined nine regular season games his first two years with the club, Alemayhu got his first in a Trojans jersey in the 75th minute of play.
Ten minutes later, he added his second of the game/his career much to the delight of his teammates. He celebrated by jogging to the sideline, jumping in the air and giving a fist pump.
"That was so sick," Akio said of Alemayhu's markers. "First two goals, in his third year. Love it."
The Trojans will play hosts once again tomorrow afternoon at 2pm when Lakeland College comes to town.
