Trojans quartet named to ACAC All-Conference Team
LETHBRIDGE, ALTA., (Feb. 26, 2020) – Four SAIT Trojans volleyball players have been rewarded for their fine seasons.
At the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Volleyball Championship Awards Banquet held Wednesday night in Lethbridge, Alta., Trojans setter Maddux Greves, middle Chris Kayser and libero Andrew Birchall were all named the South Division All-Conference Team.
Less than two hours away in Medicine Hat, Alta., at the Women's Volleyball Championship Awards Banquet, Trojans outside Jadyn Leong also earned South Division All-Conference honours.
The trio of men's players helped SAIT to a 17-7 record, good enough for third place in the ACAC South Division standings.
Birchall (3rd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) makes it two years in a row being named an All-Conference selection after another year of being one of the best defenders in the league.
His ability to read the game helped him finish third in the South Division in digs (197) and digs per set (2.56), while adding an impressive 39 assists.
For Greves (2nd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration), this is his first ACAC All-Conference selection.
In his first season at SAIT, Greves immediately made an impact. He showed a soft touch by finishing second in the entire ACAC in assists per set (8.58), while also displaying the ability to hammer on the ball with a league-leading .70 service aces per set.
With Greves being named an All-Conference selection, it gives SAIT back-to-back years with Trojans setter being named, as last year, Nathan Goss earned the award.
It is also the first All-Conference selection for Kayser (4th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration), who pound for pound, is one of the best blockers in the league and can hang with the bigger guys in the ACAC.
He finished first in the South Division in blocks (59) and second in blocks per set (.67). He also added 18 service aces and 104 kills.
For Leong (3rd year, Calgary, Business Administration), it is her second All-Conference selection in as many years.
The powerful left side had a huge year for the Trojans, who finished the year with a disappointing 6-18 record and out of the playoffs.
Leong led the entire ACAC in kills with 317, while finishing second in kills per set (3.76). She also added 39 service aces and 198 digs.
