Four Trojans earn ACAC hardware
EDMONTON, ALTA., (Oct. 24, 2019) - Four SAIT Trojans soccer players earned league-wide honours on Thursday night.
Women's team members Skye Gordon and Kenzie Georgsen, along with men's players Eduardo Filho and Yusuph Kalenga were named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division All-Conference Teams at the Conference Championship awards banquet, hosted in Edmonton by the NAIT Ooks.
For Gordon (3rd year, Langley, BC, Bachelor of Business Administration), this is her third All-Conference selection in as many seasons with the Trojans.
Her steady play and positive attitude this season kept the ship upright when the team was struggling early on. She recorded four goals and four assists in 11 games this season.
Georgsen (1st year, Chestermere, Alta., Architectural Technologies) served notice in her very first game that she was going to be a rookie to watch out for.
Throughout the season, the physical midfielder was a threat to score every time out. She finished the season with seven goals and seven assists in 11 games.
As a team, the women finished in second place in the South Division thanks to a five-game winning streak to cap the regular season with a 7-3-2 record.
They will open the ACAC Women's Soccer Championship on Friday morning against King's University at 11am in the first of two quarter-final matches.
On the men's side, Filho (4th year, Paracatu, Brazil, Environmental Technology) earned his third All-Conference selection, but first with the Trojans. He was named to the North Division All-Conference teams in the fall of 2016 and 2017 as a member of the Keyano College Huskies.
The man they call 'Duda' finished in a tie for second place on the Trojans in points with 14 (five goals, four assists).
Kalenga (3rd year, Edmonton, Alta., English Language Foundations) captures his first All-Conference selection after a strong season for the Trojans in which he finished second on the team in goals (6) despite playing in just eight games.
The men's team captured first place in the South Division with a 10-1-1 record. Because of the first-place finish, they will receive a bye into the ACAC Men's Soccer Championship semifinal on Saturday.
