Trojans Take Home Silver at CCAA Curling Championships
The Trojans men’s and women’s team came to the CCAA looking to make their mark in Regina from Feb 17-21st at the Callie Curling Club.
DAY ONE:
WOMENS:
The women’s Trojans opened their tournament with authority, taking a 7–3 win over the Niagara Knights. SAIT set the tone early, stacking up three points through the first three ends while holding Niagara to just a single point in that stretch. The Knights pushed back with a deuce to narrow the gap to 4–3 after six, but that was as close as they would get.
In ends seven and eight, the Trojans took control for good, scoring three more and managing the house confidently the rest of the way. By the final stone, SAIT had limited Niagara to just one multi‑point end, a strong defensive statement to start their campaign.
MENS:
The men’s team opened their tournament against the NAIT Ooks in a tight, back‑and‑forth battle that ultimately slipped away 8–5. The Trojans came out sharp, putting up three points through the first three ends, including a solid multi‑point start in the first. NAIT answered with momentum of their own, grabbing three points across the fourth and a steal in the fifth to flip the script.
SAIT punched back to level things at 5–5, keeping the game within reach heading into the late ends. But the Ooks found another gear, scoring three more in ends seven and eight, which proved to be the difference and sealed the result.
DAY TWO:
WOMENS:
Wednesday saw the Trojans going up against the Humber Hawks, and what a showing it was. The Trojans hit the ice rolling, putting up eight points through the first two ends, including a 3-point steal in the second end.
The Hawks would try to come back, putting up points in back to back ends, but the SAIT Trojans put up a commanding performance that ultimately saw the Hawks concede after the 6th end, for a 10-3 win during the second day of the tournament, improving to 2-0.
Later in the day, they would match up against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in a late afternoon match up. The Trojans started strong with 3 points through the 2nd and 3rd ends, and added a single in the fifth to keep the game close but it was the Queens consistency that ultimately led them to a 7-4-win late Wednesday.
It was the Queens scoring in the 6th and 7th ends to help secure the victory, they built their lead with points in the fourth, sixth, and seventh ends. A strong middle-game push and timely scoring helped RDP get the win.
MENS:
The Trojans opened their morning draw against the Gaillards du Cégep de l’Abitibi‑Témiscamingue, and it was the Gaillards who came out firing. They put points on the board in two of the first four ends, including a three‑point opener and a four‑point fourth end, leaving SAIT staring at a six‑point deficit as early as the fifth. The Trojans pushed back with scoring ends in the second, third, sixth, and seventh, refusing to fade quietly, but the early gap proved too much to erase as the Gaillards closed out an 8–5 win.
The men returned to the ice later against the Sault Cougars, looking to rebound from the morning loss. The game opened tight: SAIT struck first, Sault answered with two, and the scoreboard traded hands until things sat deadlocked after five ends. But Sault College found separation late, stringing together four points across the sixth and seventh ends to pull away. Despite a competitive, back‑and‑forth start, the Cougars’ late surge carried them to an 8–4 victory over the Trojans.
DAY THREE
WOMEN:
The Trojans opened Day 3 against the Concordia Thunder in a fantastic, back‑and‑forth battle that went the full eight ends and finished as a 7–6 nail‑biter. SAIT struck first, but the Thunder answered with points in the second and a three‑point fourth end to take a two‑point edge through four. The Trojans kept pace with singles in the first and third, staying within reach.
The middle ends saw the game open up. SAIT clawed back with two‑point efforts in both the fifth and sixth, tying things up and swinging momentum their way. A single in the seventh capped a three‑end scoring run and gave the Trojans the lead. Concordia pushed back with two in the final end, but SAIT held firm and closed out a tight 8–7 win.
The afternoon matchup against the Mohawk Mountaineers was a very different story—this time, the Trojans put on an offensive clinic in a dominant 9–2 victory. SAIT came out firing with three multi‑point ends through six, opening with a deuce and then stealing three to jump ahead 7–0 by the fourth. Mohawk answered with two in the fifth, but another Trojans double in the sixth sealed it, prompting the Mountaineers to concede after six ends.
MEN:
The men opened their day against the Assiniboine Cougars in a game that stayed tight from the first stone, with just three total points scored through the opening three ends. SAIT built themselves a solid position with multi‑point scores in the second and third, and another point in the fifth pushed the lead to 4–1. But the late ends swung hard the other way. Assiniboine put up two in the sixth, then added back‑to‑back singles in the seventh and eighth to complete a 5–4 comeback.
The theme of tight finishes continued in the next matchup with the Mohawk Mountaineers—another game that came down to the final end in a back‑and‑forth battle. The Trojans came out flying with two in the first and a three‑point steal in the second, jumping ahead 5–0 and looking fully in control. But Mohawk answered with a massive five‑point third end to erase the lead instantly and send the game into the fourth tied. The Mountaineers added a single in the fourth, and SAIT countered with two in both the fifth and seventh to reclaim a 7–6 edge heading into the final frame. Mohawk, however, found two in the eighth to flip the script once more and take an 8–7 win.
DAY FOUR:
WOMEN:
With playoff match ups solidifying, there were a number of high stakes games to cover. The Trojans opened things up with a performance for the ages, a 12-1 win over the Assiniboine Cougars that saw them with multi point ends in 4 of 6. The Trojans finished with 3 end with 3 points scored and would force a concede out of the Cougars team.
The following game was much closer, a match up with PacWest, and kept things rolling in a 5-3 win. They kept momentum going, although the defence of PacWest kept things close and in low scoring, multiple ends with points for Trojans would carry them to a hard fought 5-3 win. Despite a two-point surge from PacWest in the seventh end, SAIT added an insurance point in the eighth to secure the win and set the stage for a much-anticipated semi-finals rematch.
MEN:
The first game of the day was a Humber Hawks match up, and the men looked to get things rolling early ahead of the end of the round robin. Trojans started strong, but what would ultimately be their only multi point end being the first end, the Humber Hawks were able to put up multi-point efforts in the 2nd and 5th ends, including a critical single in the 7th end.
Things were tied after 3 ends, but a double in the 4th gave the Hawks the breathing room they needed, plus an insurance point in the 7th end.
That night, the men returned for a match up with Concordia Thunder, in what would be the closest game of the tournament for the Trojans, ending in a 5-5 draw.
Things were close from the start, neither team could seem to score more than one, and multiple ends ended with no points scored. Things were looking good for the Trojans, who were up by two going into the final end, but it was the Thunder who ended up with two huge points to tie the game after 8 ends.
The men’s team journey would end here, with the Hawks and Sault playing in the semis, as well as NAIT and the Gaillard’s, the Trojans tournament came to an end. Through 7 games, the Trojans would finish with 16 single point ends, 8 double point ends, and 1 triple point end, as well as 18 stolen points throughout the tournament. One of the many highlights was an individual award given to Nick Mitsopoulos for exemplary leadership!
FINAL DAY:
The semi-finals kicked off with a rematch of the days previous defensive match up, the SAIT Trojans women’s team was set to face off against PacWest. The Trojans came out swinging, with two points in the first end and a single in the third, things were back and forth through 4 ends, with the Trojans up 3-2.
From there, the Trojans increased their lead with a multi-point effort in the 5th end, and singles in the 6th and 7th ends, they would ultimately advance to the finals, where they would be up against the Red Deer Queens for the gold medal, after the Queens beat out Concordia 6-5. The Trojans had won the previous matchup, but with both teams at 6-1, it was anyone’s game.
SAIT opened with a single in the 2nd, but it was Red Deer who started hot with points in 3 of the 4 ends to start the game. At the end of the 5th, the Trojans would take a double to tie things at 3-3. The Queens fired back with a double of their own, to which the Trojans responded with singles in the 7th and 8th ends to bring things back to a 5-5 tie, and pushing the teams to a 9th end.
It would be the Queens taking gold, after a single point in the 9th end, giving the Red Deer Queens a 6-5 win. The Trojans would take home silver, after what was the highlight match of the day, a closely contested thriller to the end. The women finished the tournament playing 9 games, with 18 multi-point ends under their belt, and another 22 ends with a single.
