Women's Fastball Season Comes to a Wrap
October 2007
By Amanda Gushue
The SAIT Trojans women's fastball club team wrapped up their season with an incredible effort at the AIWFA Championships.
Starting the championship off with two losses against the University of Regina Cougars and the Grant MacEwan Griffins, the Trojans came back and won their third game 6-3 against cross-town rivals, the Mount Royal College Cougars. However, the Trojans fell to a 3-1 loss in their final game against the University of Alberta.
Following the playoffs, the leagues 1st and 2nd Allstar teams were chosen. SAIT's own Cassandra Edwards, a second-year pitcher for the Trojans, was chosen for the 2nd Allstar Team.
Coach George Edwards describes Cassandra as a tireless worker who always gives 100% win or lose.
The team consisted of 12 girls ranging from hometowns across Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta, and five girls being from here in Calgary.
From provincial medalists (Raenell Kammer, Brianna Davy) to a Hayley Wickenheiser Award winner (Cassandra Edwards), the Trojans had no shortage of talent on their roster this season.
The Trojan athletics department is looking forward to next season. With the popularity of fastball growing, SAIT hopes to see the sport in the ACAC league in the near future. George Edwards will return as head coach after his first season with the Trojans this year.
