Edwards, Trojan women's club fastball team earn coaching, sportsmanship awards

CALGARY -- The SAIT Trojans women's fastball team hit the strike zone in two big ways during the 2009 season.

SAIT's head coach George Edwards was named coach of the year in the Alberta Intercollegiate Women's Fastball Association, by exemplifying strength in coaching and promotion of college fastball, while the Trojans received AIWFA's team sportsmanship award.

Both trophies are considered especially significant, because winners are chosen by a panel of their peers. Edwards' award was based on votes submitted by AIWFA teams/coaches and board members, while the sportsmanship honour was based on ballots from AIWFA teams/coaches, board members and umpires.

The Trojans, a SAIT Polytechnic club team, finished 6-12 during the 2009 season, good for seventh place in a nine-team AIWFA league that included clubs representing the University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan, University of Alberta, Red Deer College, the University of Calgary, Grant MacEwan University, Mount Royal University, and the University of Lethbridge.

The AIWFA league championships, which were scheduled to be played Oct. 17 and 18 in Calgary, were cancelled due to inclement weather.

SAIT Trojans had 3 players chosen for the 2nd Team Allstars: Kiara Rothert, Samantha Woznow, Crystal Watson

The SAIT Trojans women's fastball club team wrapped up their season with an incredible effort at the AIWFA Championships.

Starting the championship off with two losses against the University of Regina Cougars and the Grant MacEwan Griffins, the Trojans came back and won their third game 6-3 against cross-town rivals, the Mount Royal College Cougars. However, the Trojans fell to a 3-1 loss in their final game against the University of Alberta.

Following the playoffs, the leagues 1st and 2nd Allstar teams were chosen. SAIT's own Cassandra Edwards, a second-year pitcher for the Trojans, was chosen for the 2nd Allstar Team.

Coach George Edwards describes Cassandra as a tireless worker who always gives 100% win or lose.

The team consisted of 12 girls ranging from hometowns across Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta, and five girls being from here in Calgary.

From provincial medalists (Raenell Kammer, Brianna Davy) to a Hayley Wickenheiser Award winner (Cassandra Edwards), the Trojans had no shortage of talent on their roster this season.

The Trojan athletics department is looking forward to next season. With the popularity of fastball growing, SAIT hopes to see the sport in the ACAC league in the near future. George Edwards will return as head coach after his first season with the Trojans this year.
