Sheila Bergen -Women's Basketball
Wall of Distinction Inductee -Spring 2008

Sheila Bergen's arrival at SAIT coincided with a turn in the program's fortunes that would see the Trojan Women's Basketball team ranked in the top ten in the country every ranking for 10 consecutive years. It was the foundation built by Bergen and her teammates in those early years that established the Trojans Women's Basketball team's reputation for toughness and intensity that has endured so long.
Although Sheila was a leading scorer for SAIT, she was also widely recognized as a defensive standout conference wide and always drew the assignment of guarding the opposition's top players. She was named a team Captain by her second season, and led the team to SAIT's first ever appearance at the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championships in the spring of 1993. Sheila was recognized as a First Team All Star at the Championships as the Trojans played in the Bronze medal game. The team was back again for a second appearance in 1994, a season that saw Bergen named an ACAC All Star for the second consecutive year, as well as team Most Valuable Player and a CCAA All Canadian. It was also that year that Sheila was named SAIT's Female Athlete of the Year, bringing to an end an exemplary career as a Trojan both on and off the court.
Her leadership, her passion for the game, and her often intimidating intensity will remain a measuring stick for Trojan athletes of the future.
