Karl Olsen

As the "voice of the Trojans and Helena's (Lady Trojans)", Karl's connections to SAIT Sports dates back to the 1981-82 Basketball Season when former Head Coach Phil Allen asked him to help out with the inaugural SAIT Basketball Classic as the game announcer. He continued as game announcer until the 1997-98 season - a 16-year career filled with numerous memories.

Karl traveled with the Trojans and Helena's/Lady Trojans to 6 CCAA Tournaments which netted the Trojans 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 3 Bronze Medals in 10 CCAA appearances. In 8 medal showings, the Trojan's were in the Championship games 5 times. Karl also witnessed the Trojan's 7 consecutive ACAC Championships - a feat never accomplished by another team in the Province's history and a record not likely to ever be equaled or exceeded!

In SAIT's golden era of Sports (1980s), Karl and son Erik traveled extensively with the hockey, volleyball, and basketball teams to league, exhibition (USA destinations) tournaments, and championship events. He served on SAIT's Athletic Board, is a charter member of the Trojans Athletic Foundation, and has emceed numerous Athletic Awards Banquets and special sports events.

From watching Joey Johnson win the Classic dunk contest, "Jumpin" Johnney Wilson (Chicago's Malcolm X Eagles Head Coach) kick a basket from centre court (his trademark as a 1957-58 Globetrotter), to traveling with and knowing so many SAIT people; the game Karl loves so much plays continuously in his mind and has paid back a thousand fold over what he has invested. "Mine eyes have seen the glory days of SAIT Athletics - and the future is as bright as the past"
