Merv started with SAIT in September 1962 as a Metals Instructor and was there until 1973 (11 years). He then transferred sin September 1973 to Coordinator of Student Activities and was in that position until 1981 (8 years). Merv was then promoted in September 1981 to the Assistant Director of Student Services. He was there until 1991 (10 years). Merv has a total of 29 years at SAIT to this point in his career.
Merv's major responsibilities at SAIT involved the social and cultural activities. However, he was very supportive of the athletic needs on campus. Merv also managed the arena, gymnasium, and swimming pool.
He participated on a number of athletic committees, one of which was the 1982 CCAA Championship hosted by SAIT.
Merv's interest in SAIT Athletics came naturally from his extensive background in football (he attended the Calgary Stampeder try-out camp), hockey, and baseball. He is much admired by the SAIT Students' Councils and the "Merv Parker Award for Outstanding Student Leadership" is presented annually by SAITSA.
Over the years, Merv's file has been filled with acknowledgements from a number of groups such as the Red Cross Society, Clean Calgary, and OCO to name a few.
