BLOG by: Annalise Posein -SAIT Trojan Women's Basketball POSTED: December 1/08

We are now done the first part of the season and we are starting to get a bit of a break to study and finish all the finals for our classes.
This last weekend was overall a good experience and gave our team a new perspective. We won against Mount Royal in their gym which gave us the belief that we CAN challenge to be first in our league this year. And then we lost on Saturday at SAIT letting us know we are not there yet, and still need to improve.
Our starters did a great job this weekend playing while being tired and playing great defense with a lot of heart. Our team really came together this weekend to reach the common goal of winning.
Overall, we did something that we wanted to do all season. We should no longer be known as the "Rookie Team" at SAIT. Now we are just a team, trying to challenge for the top position. We are 7 and 3 when maybe most people expected us to be 3 and 7.
We have no games until December 27th now, but it will be up to us to stay in shape for the most part until then. I am starting to get excited for the holidays! It will be nice to finish everything off here at school and have some time to relax with family and friends.

One common misconception about varsity soccer players is that we have the longest off-season. When I hear people say this I have to laugh since we actually have one of the shortest breaks out of all the sports. Although the college season ends in November, this doesn't mean we stop playing. Most players go on to join various club teams, and often the club season lasts well into the start of the ACAC. So although the varsity season is over for Trojan soccer players, we definitely haven't stopped playing. In fact, the SAIT women still practice every Monday night and nine female Trojans managed to stay together for the indoor club season. These Trojan's are making waves in the indoor soccer circuit, joining the Calgary Caledonian Football Club. Better known by its nickname, the Calgary Callie's, these ladies are currently sitting in first place with 5 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss. Watching the team play, there's no doubt that the determination and chemistry amongst the SAIT players is rubbing off on their new teammates. Even though the start of the next varsity soccer season is still many months away, they say that team that plays together stays together. If this is true, the Trojan's are bound to have a strong roster come the start of the next season. Happy but not satisfied. That is how our team needed to feel after a great weekend playing Medicine Hat.
Our first game was on Friday on our home court that was filled with enthusiastic fans. It is always nice to see younger players watching our level of basketball. I am not sure if it was those young fans, but something sure got our team going! We ended up winning 81-49 feeling pretty good about ourselves, but needing to think about the game on Saturday. We did win Saturday as well but it was a closer game. The positive of that game was seeing how good our defense really could be in the final five minutes. When your offense starts to slow down, you need to be able to rely on good defense to win games and now we know that we will be able to do that.
In sports you can never really feel satisfied with yourself or your performance. You always need to look ahead to the next game, your next performance needs to get better every game or you are moving backward.
You can be sure that the other teams in the league are working hard to improve themselves. This week we cannot let ourselves relax; our team will be playing the "cross town rivals" Mount Royal. They are a good team and we will be ready. We want the 2 wins bad, and our play will reflect that.
Come cheer on exciting games this weekend in Calgary!

Reg Carrick -Assistant Coach SAIT Trojan Women's Basketball POSTED: November 12, 2008

Saturday just past was a great day. It began with the re-match of our basketball teams versus the Briercrest Clippers. It was an ugly game but a win is a win. Two freshmen, Chelsey Pekar and Annalise Posein stepped up to help us secure victory and veteran Rachel Johnson lit up the scoreboard playing at the front of our pressing schemes. That was just the start of our day.

I took my wife and three kids to the SAIT versus Mount Royal College hockey game that evening which was also a re-match of action from Friday. We were totally impressed with the family atmosphere and the level of hockey being played. It was fast, hard hitting, lots of skill and a handful of scraps just to keep the intensity up. My four year old son won a SAIT game jersey and I won a pint of beer. Where else could a family of five get entertainment value like that? We were under twenty dollars for the whole evening.

Then my wife took the kids home and I watched my friend Sam Masterton open for Katie Rox at the Gateway Pub located in the student center. Sam did his thing on the guitar and it was a sweet end to a great day.

If you are scared of roller coasters don't follow SAIT women's basketball too closely. To the outside observer we appear to be ready to challenge the big dogs one day and not a playoff team the next. In my opinion neither is correct. We are a very young team with two freshmen point guards and as they go we go. Rachel Caputo breaks the hearts and ankles of the opposition and Stephanie Chomyn is a steady hand when at the wheel. Our next games are versus Medicine Hat College who we are tied with for third in the ACAC. We'll have a clearer idea of where our team is headed after next weekend.

Shannon Greer- SAIT Trojan Women's Soccer POSTED: November 10, 2008

With our season ending a little earlier than we had hoped for, the Trojan women's soccer team is always looking for ways to stay together and keep playing soccer. On November 7, 2008 our team was given the unique opportunity to do both. Six members of the Trojans laced up their cleats and took to the field to participate in the Mike Metcalfe 30 Hour Soccer Marathon for Cancer. This soccer marathon is a thirty hour game played in one hour increments by players of all ages and skill levels. It helps raise awareness and funds for cancer in a fun, athletic environment. The Trojan women were joined by players from the men's team, former Trojans and a few new faces to create an unstoppable team. The score of the game is cumulative from the games previous, but the Trojans managed to rack the score up from 45 to 51 during our hour long game. Everyone who participated in the event had a great time and enjoyed playing for a cause that has touched so many of us. Over all, the event was a great success and something that our team hopes to be involved in for many years to come. A loss is never an easy pill to swallow. No one wants to be the loser, and no one wants to be close to a win and lose it at the last second. Unfortunately, that is what happened with our basketball team this past weekend. We played in Lethbridge on Friday against Lethbridge Community College and they played here at SAIT on Saturday. Friday was our chance to win.
I am sure that we caught Lethbridge off guard when we were not only keeping up with them, but actually winning throughout parts of the game. In the final minutes though, the win started to slip away and their team closed the gap. We lost by 3 points. We missed 23 free throws. As you can imagine, that left a very sick feeling in our stomachs.
A free throw is a bit of an anomaly. It is the same shot every time, and it is something that you most likely practice a lot as a player. But sometimes, when you get to that line it is as though you have too much time and the shot is too easy. I think that the pressure of being on that line gets to us at times, but that is definitely going to change. Confidence and focus is all that you need in that free throw shot and that is what we are trying to gain.
Anyway, that was our chance to upset the team ranked number one (by the coaches in our conference). We were not expected to win, but it would have been amazing. Maybe that feeling of being so close made us a little greedy, wanting to be the best right away. Our inconsistent play lost Saturday's game.
But, the reality is that it does not fully matter who is the best today, it matters who the winner will be at the end of the season. That is what we are working towards.
I would like to point out that my teammate, Breanna Emmerzael, was SAIT's athlete of the week last week, because of her double double status in the last games we have played. She was also ranked number one in scoring in our league last week.
Come cheer us on in our games this coming weekend! Games are @ SAIT at 6pm Friday and 1pm Saturday both vs Briercrest with Men's games to follow.
