SAIT Athletics and Recreation holds its annual Awards Banquet at the Red & White Club in the spring after each Trojan season. The event is generally attended by approximately 300 athletes, coaches, and special guests. SAIT Athletics is pleased to announce the winners of the awards:
2011-12 SAIT Trojans Athletic Banquet Award Winners -March 30, 2012
SAIT Trojans Male Athlete of the Year: Darcee Froese (Men's Volleyball)
SAIT Trojans Female Athlete of the Year: Rachel Caputo (Women's Basketball)
Trojan of the Year (unsung hero): Jon Malin (Men's Hockey)
Jon Malin, a graduating fourth-year SAIT Trojan men's hockey player, displayed courage, determination and spirit on and off the ice, in the classroom and in the community all season long. Malin was named the 2012 Trojan of the Year as the unsung hero who deserved to be recognized.
Malin was not only a threatening defenseman, but the Trojan's team captain and a big key to SAIT's success in shutting down the opposition's top lines. He battled all season long, and bumps and bruises could not slow him down.
Malin finished his collegiate career with 90 regular-season games and was in the lineup for all 32 post-season games played by the Trojans in the last four years.
Jon Malin is a hard-working honor student with a top-notch GPA in his final year of studies in the Bachelor of Applied Technology Petroleum Engineering program.
Overall, he is a first-class ambassador of the Trojans. Although he never strives to be in the limelight, he always graciously takes on the role to represent the Trojans in a professional manner at media and Trojan Outreach events. As a player, Malin is always the first to help others, and is sincerely humble about his success.
His personal courage became a quiet inspiration to many as he continued to excel as a student and as an athlete despite dealing with a dear family member's critical health issues that have been ongoing for more than a year.
Jon Malin has been praised for his "outstanding character" by his head coach and at 6'6" is someone all Trojans can figuratively and literally look up to.
The athletes of the year are nominated by their coaches and a list of names is given to a selection committee. The committee then takes each athlete and rates them according to the pillars of excellence in SAIT Trojans athletics. The pillars consist of athletic excellence, academic success and community citizenship.
Female Athlete of the Year Nominees:
-basketball point guard Rachel Caputo (4th year, Edmonton, new media production and design)
-volleyball setter/outside hitter Robyn Froese (2nd year, Red Deer, Alta., business administration)
-hockey forward Melanie Vincent (5th year, Ladysmith, B.C., medical laboratory technology)
-cross-country runner Rebecca Britton (2nd year, Brandon, Man, medical radiologic technology)
-club fastball infielder Kelsi McLachlan (Victoria, B.C., emergency medical technician)
Rachel Caputo, who is from Edmonton, AB, is a 5' 7" offensive powerhouse on the court and was once again named SAIT Trojans Female Athlete of the Year, for the second consecutive season.
As the Trojans' fourth year veteran shooting guard and a co-captain, Caputo led the ACAC during the 2011-2012 regular season with 19.17 points a game, an average that ranked No. 4 on the CCAA national leaderboard. She also paced the ACAC with a conference-leading 3.74 steals a game as the Trojans earned their third consecutive ticket to the ACAC's Final Four tournament, placing fourth.
Caputo has earned ACAC All-Conference status in all four of her seasons in a SAIT uniform, including the past two with a first-team designation.
She hit 30 points twice this season (Oct. 29 at Briercrest and Nov. 19 vs. Augustana) and nailed one double-double (15 points and 11 rebounds) on Nov. 4 at Lakeland.
"She is what most coaches call inspirational. She's not into individual glory whatsoever . . . but she is, unquestionably, a superstar in this league," said head coach Donovan Martin, who had nothing but praise in regard to his veteran shooter.
"She has no idea how good she is and is one of the most humble and unassuming athletes I have ever seen. She is the poster girl for what a student-athlete should aspire to."
But Rachel Caputo is not just a leader on the court. Caputo is also an active participant in community citizenship. She took part in a painting project for Calgary Boys and Girls Club and supported the women's basketball Toy Drive for the Women's Shelter in December. Caputo has even helped sell tickets for Fight Against Cancer.
In the classroom, Caputo is completing her first year in the New Media Production and Design program after already completing a SAIT Business Administration diploma.
Rachel Caputo won a CCAA Academic All-Canadian award this season for her impressive stats on the court and an equally impressive 3.80 GPA in class. She is a back-to-back CCAA All-Canadian winner, which is an extremely rare feat.
Coach Martin, who has been coaching in the ACAC for more than 23 seasons, says he has never had a player win back-to-back All-Canadian awards before.
In her four years in a Trojan uniform, Caputo has chalked up 1,159 career regular-season points. She is second in all-time SAIT Trojans regular season scoring only behind Lisa Erickson (1996-99 and 2000-01) and her SAIT-leading total of 1,401. But we all know that records were made to be broken and Rachel Caputo still has one season of college eligibility left.
Congratulations to SAIT's female athlete of the year, from the Trojans women's basketball team, Rachel Caputo.
Male Athlete of the Year Nominees:
- volleyball player Darcee Froese (3rd year, Red Deer, Alta., bachelor of business administration accounting)
- volleyball libero Nic Davies (4th year, Calgary, nutrition for healthy lifestyles)
-soccer midfielder Seamus Smyth (1st year, St. Albert, Alta., administrative information management)
-cross-country runner Tony Kiprop (1st year, Eldoret, Kenya, travel and tourism)
-hockey forward Clinton Pettapiece (4th year, Christina Lake, B.C., power and process operations)
The winner of the SAIT Trojans Male Athlete of the Year is Bachelor of Business Administration Accounting student, from the men's volleyball team Darcee Froese.
The 2011-2012 season was Froese's first in SAIT red and white after spending the previous two years with his hometown Red Deer College Kings. Although he was a newcomer, he was named co-captain and quickly became a true Trojan.
Darcee Froese is reliable, focused and a leader on and off the court. He is a rock-steady left-side hitter who held himself to a remarkable standard, and delivered one match after another. Froese helped the Trojans advance to the eight-team ACAC championship tournament, where the team finished seventh overall.
Darcee Froese finished the season tied for 9th in the ACAC with an average of 3 kills a set for a total of 253 in 84 sets, including a single-match high of 27 versus Mount Royal University on Feb. 8. He was ranked 2nd across the conference in service aces with 31 (0.37 per set). Froese was named an ACAC second-team all-star and followed it up with a tournament all-star nod at the ACAC provincial championships.
Head coach Ryan Marsden says, "He was such a huge factor every single match. Darcee was always so clutch, and that brought confidence to our group."
Aside from just his impact on the court, Froese values the Trojans pillars of success for a student athlete, including community citizenship.
Froese helped the Trojans men's volleyball team run clinics and was a volleyball referee at a number of local tournaments. He also participated in the Movember fundraising for prostate cancer and grew a moustache along with the rest of the team.
Darcee Froese is also hitting his mark in the classroom and boasts a remarkable 3.75 GPA in his program. His successes on the court and in his studies earned him a prestigious CCAA Academic All-Canadian nod.
"He's a quiet guy and doesn't have much to say, but when he says it, the words that come out of his mouth are so profound and make such a big impact," said coach Marsden.
"He didn't talk much but he walked the walk. That's the thing I respected about him."
The SAIT Trojans are thrilled he chose to don the Trojan red and white. Congratulations to SAIT's male athlete of the year from men's volleyball, Darcee Froese.

CALGARY(April 7, 2011) - The SAIT Trojans athletic department celebrated the 2010-2011 season on Thursday, April 7 at the Red & White Club. The following is a list of award winners and recognition at this night full of celebration:
-Trojan of the Year (unsung hero)- Josh White (MBB)
-Female Athlete of the Year - Rachel Caputo (WBB)
-Male Athlete of the Year - Shane Lust (MHOC)
The "Trojan of the Year" award was created three years ago based on an athlete who epitomizes the definition of a true Trojan.
With courageous determination and a fighting spirit, Josh White was a warrior for his team. He completed a remarkable season with the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team. Not for what the team accomplished on the court, but for all the things he demonstrated in being a Trojan.
Josh White's 2nd season as starting point guard was interrupted at Christmas time by virtue of a torn Achilles tendon. As it appeared that this athlete's season and Trojan career was coming to an abrupt end, he continued to support and cheer on his teammates like every teammate should.
Josh White is a student-athlete with a career 4.0 GPA in Business Administration. He continued to be a full-time student simultaneously at 2 institutions, while he also meticulously attended rehab sessions. In a stunning revelation to the SAIT coaching staff, his teammates and his physician, Josh White's injury healed completely in only four weeks. He was able to resume his playing career, with no limitations, and finish on his own terms.
An inspirational leader to the team both on and off the court, this student-athlete only added to lore of what it is to be a Trojan. Josh White exudes courage, determination and spirit.
The athletes of the year are nominated by their coaches and a list of names is given to a selection committee. The committee then takes each athlete and rates them according to the pillars of excellence in SAIT Trojans athletics. The pillars consist of athletic excellence, academic success and community citizenship.
-women's basketball guard and Business Administration student: Rachel Caputo
-women's volleyball player and Business Administration student:
-Daly Donaghy
-cross-country runner and Medical Radiologic Technology student Rebecca Britton
-women's hockey defenceman and Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant student Amanda Williams
In the Trojan's ACAC leading 17-1 regular season record, Rachel Caputo led the ACAC South Division in scoring. She notched an impressive 17.56 points per game average, 41.5 field goal percentage, 30% 3-point average, 3.56 rebounds/game, 2.2 steals/game and 1.7 assists per game. This ACAC First Team All Star and CCAA All-Canadian has a complete game -scoring, rebounding, passing and defence, despite her lack of size at 5'7".
SAIT women's basketball head coach Donovan Martin describes her as a "clutch player". Most memorably this season, Rachel Caputo showcased one of the most impressive performances in SAIT basketball history during the ACAC Quarter-Finals. In the three games of the ACAC Quarter-Finals versus the Augustana Vikings, Caputo scored a total of 79 points to lead the Trojans to a series victory and a spot in the ACAC Provincials. In the deciding game (Game 3) of the ACAC Quarter-Finals at SAIT Gym, the SAIT Trojans and Augustana Vikings were tied going into the 4th quarter when Rachel Caputo took over. She scored 23 points in the 4th quarter to finish the game with 38 points, 7 rebounds and 4 more steals in the SAIT victory.
Overall, she is a very classy player -win or lose. Academically, Rachel boasts a 3.57 GPA in Business Administration. Along with her Trojan teammates, she takes part in coaching clinics for junior high schools and helping out in the community with worthwhile causes such as the Calgary Boys and Girls Club.
-cross country runner and Business Administration student Josh Inhaber
-men's volleyball setter and Business Administration student Patrick Mead
-men's hockey forward and Business Administration student Shane Lust
Shane Lust, the assistant captain in his fourth and final season as a SAIT Trojan, led the team in regular season scoring with 22 goals, 25 assists and a total of 47 points and was third in ACAC scoring. His consistent contribution helped put the Trojans team in top spot in the ACAC standings and all the way to the ACAC Finals. Lust, a first-line winger, played in every Trojans game this season and was named to the ACAC All-Conference First Team.
His rout on the ACAC stats pages continued as he notched:
- 5 Game Winning Goals (Tied for 1st in ACAC)
- 4 Insurance Goals (Tied for 1st in ACAC)
- 4 Shorthanded Goals (1st in ACAC)
- 4 Shorthanded Assists (1st in ACAC)
A great two-way player, committed to defence, Shane Lust has a talent for scoring goals. With 22 goals this season, he became the SAIT Trojans all-time goal scorer with a career total of 74 goals and second spot for all-time goals scored in the ACAC. He added another career record with 152 career points, the most ever points produced by a SAIT Trojan.
Throughout the year, Shane Lust was an active member in Trojan Outreach Program events and was a head coach for the Trojan Summer Sport Camps. He will be graduating from Business Administration with a second major in marketing this spring.
During the recent ACAC men's hockey playoffs, Shane Lust tallied 10 points in 8 games including 7 goals and 3 assists to be third in ACAC playoffs scoring. Despite losing the final game in ACAC finals, Shane Lust showed the heart of a champion.

The SAIT Trojans Annual Athletic Awards Banquet was held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Red and White Club. The SAIT Trojans handed out all team and individual awards, including the Trojans Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The event was attended by over 340 student athletes, coaches and special guests.
For the 2009-2010 athletics season, the SAIT Trojans had one of their most successful years in their athletics history. The Trojan teams won a total of seven Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) medals, which is the second most in the sports of basketball, hockey, volleyball and soccer.
SAIT Trojan Athletics celebrated ALL of the Trojan team medalists for 2009-10:
- Men's Soccer -ACAC Silver
- Women's Basketball -ACAC Gold
- Men's Volleyball -CCAA Silver, ACAC Gold
- Men's Basketball -CCAA Silver, ACAC Bronze
- Men's Hockey -ACAC Gold

Kim Lee -Women's Basketball (guard, Toronto, ON, Business Administration) Kim Lee had been a strong force to be reckoned with all season long. She led the ACAC with 20.37 points per game and helped the Trojans capture their fourth ACAC title in school history, and first since 2002. In recognition of her sublime season, Kim Lee was awarded CCAA Player of the Year (Women's Basketball), CCAA All-Canadian, and the female ACAC Conference Player of the Year. She also consistently was one of the conference's top three-point threats and topped the ACAC's South Division in field-goal percentage (52.6) and steals per game (4.00). Lee dominated games including notching 38-point outings during SAIT's quest in the post-season. She joined the Trojans just prior to the season for her final year of college eligibility after tenure at the University of Waterloo.

Mike Ullrich -Men's Hockey (forward, Banff, AB, Hospitality Management) Mike Ullrich, in his second season with the Trojans, won the 2009-2010 ACAC men's hockey scoring race this regular season with 53 points, including 17 goals in 28 games and only eight penalty minutes. He added in nine points in the post-season to help hoist the SAIT Trojans' fourth straight ACAC Championship men's hockey title this March. For his remarkable 2009-2010 season, the ACAC recognized Ullrich as male ACAC Conference Player of the Year as well as ACAC Top Scorer. He also is an accomplished student in the Hospitality Management program.
The Trojan of the Year is awarded to a player who epitomizes the Trojan motto of "Courage, Determination, Spirit". The "Trojan of the Year" is often an unsung hero and an inspirational player to his teammates and coach. This year's recipient:
Keenan Milburn -Men's Basketball (guard, Royston, BC, Business Administration).

With courageous determination and a fighting spirit, Keenan Millburn was a warrior for the men's basketball team throughout the regular season and CCAA Nationals. Head coach Mike Stevens commented, "He is everything a perfect athlete should be. He does everything he is asked to and is the epitome of hard work." In first half of the season, he was diagnosed with a heart ailment but did not let that injury get him down and was an integral part of the team's success in winning a CCAA Silver medal. Stevens says "Keenan has a will to win that is infectious." Off the court he gave back as a Jr. Trojans Sunday Academy Volunteer Instructor. In addition, he always has a huge smile on his face and is a very positive part of his team.
NOTE: "Trojan" Award is for the team's unsung hero/inspirational player.

Mr. Cash Leadership Award Erin Schwab- Women's Soccer
Minor Official of the Year Erin Schwab

Female - Jessica Hamel (Women's Volleyball)

Throughout the year, Jessica was a presence on the court and every weekend, she brought in huge stats for her team. For Example, against Mount Royal in January, she had 26 kills and 31 digs and against Briercrest in November where she recorded 33 digs and 15 kills, with a couple of service aces. For the 2008-09 regular season, Jessica was ranked fourth in the South Division in digs with 289. She was also 10th overall in kills in the South with 214. During the playoff weekend at Mount Royal, Jessica ranked 11th overall in digs with 65 and had 28 kills. She was named to the South Division All Conference Team. Hamel has received the All-Conference team award for 5 years. She also made a position change which is difficult for any player. Jessica is positive and always on the court pumping up her team. Jessica worked hard in the Human Resources and Labour Program through the University of Lethbridge. As a leader by example, she has worked to become a great Trojan athlete and will be missed by the Women's Volleyball program. Hamel is loved by her teammates and respected by her coaches.
Male -Aleksei Myroniuk (Men's Volleyball)

After overcoming what was thought to be a season ending injury, Aleksei brought the team back from being 3 and 7 in the first semester to 7 and 3 in the second semester. Even though he missed the 1st semester, the coaches made an exception and awarded him to the South Division All-Conference Team. In the regular season, Aleksei was 1st overall in service aces with 30 in only 37 games and was 8th overall in kills with 148. Myroniuk had a presence on the court and was dominant in his left side position. During the regular season, against Mount Royal in January, he had 32 kills, 11 digs and 4 aces. In the playoff qualification weekend against Lakeland, he had 26 kills and 10 service aces. Aleksei has academic success in Mechanical Engineering. He is a past Provincial Team 16 and Under Assistant Coach and is, by far, the best Trojan Outreach Program Coach on their team. Aleksei is the best leader anyone could ask for, who gave absolutely everything to his team and the institution this year.

This award was created last year based on a student athlete who epitomizes the definition of a true Trojan -an athlete with courageous determination and fighting spirit. Kyle Dorowicz was a warrior during playoffs, making key hits to stop any player that came in his way. He endured injuries this season, but battled his way back onto the ice to help his team win their third Championship in a row. As a 2nd year Business Administration student, Kyle's pleasant demeanour and comedic style make him a true leader on and off the ice.

Throughout the year, Leanne Becking received numerous accolades. For her efforts, Leanne received a SAIT Trojan Athlete of the Week award as well as an ACAC Athlete of the Week award. She was the only Trojan to receive the CCAA All-Canadian award this season.
Becking consistently clocks 30-35 minutes per game as part of her strong efforts to the team. She has been successful in each of the Trojan Pillars and actively participates in the Trojan Outreach Program to promote basketball and be involved in the community. She treats opponents and officials with respect and exudes quiet class off the court and in excels in the Business Administration program. As a leader by example, Leanne always does the right thing and makes the right choices. She is very popular with her teammates and they respect her value for hard work.
Male -Reese St. Goddard (Men's Hockey)
Reese was the key to his team's success especially through playoffs. Impressing coach Babey so much during the Mount Royal series Babey commented it was the best goaltending he had ever seen in his 20 years as coach. Reese recorded two shutouts during the semi finals, including going 154 minutes without having a goal put past him. As starting goalie for all the playoffs he recorded six straight wins and zero losses. Reese was the regular season leader among all ACAC goalies with a goals against average of 2.90 and a 90 percent save percentage. A second year business administration student, he was recognized by the ACAC as the top scholastic player. On the ice, Reese St. Goddard is a very focused and determined team player. He has a great sense of humour in the locker room, not to mention Reese had one of the best playoff moustaches in the Trojan lineup.
